Snapshot Cal Coast is June 17-July 9! Help us document California’s incredible biodiversity on your own or at a bioblitz event near you.

Information provided by our partners at the California Academy of Sciences

For two weeks every year, the California Academy of Sciences—with support from the California Ocean Protection Council, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the MPA (Marine Protected Area) Collaborative Network, and many other partners—mobilizes communities from Del Norte to San Diego to make and share observations of plants, animals, and seaweeds along the California coast using the iNaturalist app. By creating a real-time, statewide snapshot of current species ranges, we’re building a community of observers that provides valuable data for scientists at local, regional, and state levels, and answering targeted research questions in support of California Marine Protected Areas.

We are very excited to announce the Snapshot Cal Coast 2023 dates! Snapshot Cal Coast will run from June 17th-July 9th
We like the longer window that gives us two tide series to schedule and host events and this timeframe will allow us to add a Summer Solstice Sea Star Search to Snapshot Cal Coast! For those of you new to Snapshot Cal Coast, you can learn more about the program here.
We are excited to partner with you all this year and work together to gather data using iNaturalist along the California Coast. Please share your thoughts, ideas and questions in this information-gathering form and our team will get back to you. Thanks so much!!
Our Snapshot Cal Coast team has grown!
Dr. Natalie Low is our Biodiversity Data Scientist working on bringing all of the data we collect together into an Early Warning and Forecasting System for biodiversity change on the CA Coast. Through this work, they will be mobilizing community-collected data from Snapshot Cal Coast and iNaturalist to understand climate vulnerability, changes in species ranges, and community makeup. Natalie started with our team just before Snapshot Cal Coast 2022. Natalie is a marine biologist and data scientist.
Olivia VanDamme is our new Community Science Coordinator. Olivia works on our team to build and support all the campaigns we run and the partnerships necessary to make them successful, including Snapshot Cal Coast, the Solstice Sea Star Search, the City Nature Challenge, and more. Olivia is an experienced environmental educator, facilitator, and collaborator.
Both Natalie and Olivia are committed to justice, equity, and inclusion in all of their work.
Snapshot Cal Coast owes much of its success to all of you!  We are looking forward to an amazing 8th year!
