MPA Collaborative

About

The mission of the Humboldt Collaborative is to engage diverse communities in support of MPAs and the resources they provide from Pelican Beach to Shelter Cove.

The Humboldt Collaborative draws its membership from the rich scientific and nonprofit community, tribal governments, representatives, and individual indigenous peoples, fishers, and agencies active on the North Coast. The Collaborative recently partnered with the Del Norte Collaborative to create a visually appealing brochure featuring tribally-provided content and inclusive of regulations and interpretive information specific to Del Norte and Humboldt counties. Additionally, the collaboratives supported tribal partners in the creation of a ”Best Practices for Tribal Engagement in MPA Stewardship” document that outlines several recommendations for equitable outreach and partnership. The Collaborative is proud to have completed new interpretive signage for installation throughout the region that features local tribal information.

Past projects include creating teacher toolkits to empower local elementary school teachers to provide MPA lessons to their classes and producing engaging MPA videos incorporating the voices of Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation elders.

A marine protected area network does not confer community structure resilience to a marine heatwave across coastal ecosystems

A marine protected area network does not confer community structure resilience to a marine heatwave across coastal ecosystems

Marine protected areas (MPAs) have gained attention as a conservation tool for enhancing ecosystem resilience to climate change. However, empirical evidence explicitly linking MPAs to enhanced ecological resilience is limited and mixed. To better understand whether MPAs can buffer climate impacts, we tested the resistance and recovery of marine communities to the 2014–2016 Northeast Pacific heatwave in the largest scientifically designed MPA network in the world off the coast of California, United States.
North Coast Kelp Canopy Drone Data Available on BIOS

North Coast Kelp Canopy Drone Data Available on BIOS

TNC and our partners have collaborated with CDFW to make our California North Coast 3 cm kelp canopy data available via BIOs, an online system run by the Department designed to enable the visualization and analysis of biogeographic data. These data were collected annually from 2019 – 2022 using drones to assess emergent kelp canopy area at priority sites established by the Sonoma-Mendocino Bull Kelp Recovery Plan, and the effort represents the largest marine resource drone surveys in California state history to our knowledge.
